WHO IS STILL RELEVANT IN 2017?

We have listened to them in 2016, now we want to know who you prefer listening to in 2017. SA Hip Hop has changed dramatically in the last year or so. Rappers have been making a lot of money and the corporates have been buying into the culture more than ever before.

Last years Top 10 list was on fire as it included only the best in Mzansi which are:

Kwesta AKA Dakar, taking the #1 spot, has some of the biggest hits in 2016 and he undoubtedly is the only rap artist who released a groundbreaking single which managed to top charts for several months consistently.

Cassper Nyovest, The New Age Doc Shebeleza on #2, released his sopjhomore album last year and he released a lot of the videos this year. The rapper has also been making a lot of groundbreaking moves like being the first SA artist to be on Sway In The Morning.

AKA, The Supa Mega on #3, has had an amazing year despite not releasing a lot of his own music. The rapper managed to deliver top notch verses on all of the songs he collaborated on and he has managed to host his own shows.

Ricky Rick, Mr Boss Zonke on #4, has been carving his own lane for a while now and it’s now clear that the homie is one of the most fashionable men on the continent. Riky Rick has made several power moves including his Russian Beer endorsement deal.

Emtee The Huslta on #5, his debut album was certified platinum in June and he has been making some major moves like making songs with Trey Songz. The rapper has enjoyed a very successful year and it’s clear that 2017 is going to be bigger for him.

The music scene in South Africa is very dynamic and versatile. It has gone through changes that have resulted to new music genres, collaboration between traditional and modern artists, as well as fusion between different genres. Artists from all over the country are putting out considered and impactful music that is boldly pioneering a new sound. Unique, multilingual, and distinctly local, these are the rappers carving out a new identity for South African hip hop. We’ve listed a few of those rappers here. Some have just arrived on the scene, whilst others have already accrued a considerable following.
