Bafana Bafana Outshine Morocco with Impressive Victory in AFCON Qualifier
Date: June 17, 2023
South Africa's national football team, Bafana Bafana, delivered a remarkable performance to secure a 2-1 victory over Morocco in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group K match held at the FNB Stadium. The match, although inconsequential in terms of qualification, provided an excellent opportunity to gauge Bafana Bafana's progress under coach Hugo Broos. Defeating the Atlas Lions, who recently reached the World Cup semifinals, showcased South Africa's potential as they prepare for the upcoming finals in Ivory Coast next year.
South Africa took an early lead in the fifth minute, courtesy of an own goal by Morocco goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi, who fumbled Percy Tau's seemingly harmless cross, allowing it to trickle over the goal line. In the 12th minute, Mohamedi partially redeemed himself with a sharp save to deny Themba Zwane's shot following Zakhele Lepasa's cross. Despite Morocco enjoying more possession, their efforts to create clear-cut opportunities for key players like Hakim Ziyech and Youssef En Nesyri were largely thwarted by Bafana Bafana's organized defense.

Bafana Bafana proved dangerous on the counterattack, utilizing the speed of Percy Tau and Thapelo Morena on the right flank, while Zwane and Mihali Mayambela intelligently exploited spaces across the forward line. The first half concluded with South Africa leading 1-0, although they missed a golden opportunity to extend their advantage as Lepasa's low shot was smothered by Mohamedi.
Shortly after the start of the second half, Lepasa found the back of the net from close range, capitalizing on Mayambela's shot that Mohamedi could only partially block. Lepasa's celebratory gesture, extending his arms like an airplane, served as a touching tribute to former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker, who had recently passed away.
Morocco responded in the 60th minute when Ziyech cut inside from the right and expertly placed a shot into the bottom corner, reigniting their hopes of a comeback. Bafana Bafana's Teboho Mokoena had a chance to seal the game on the 82nd minute but narrowly missed over the crossbar, sparing Morocco further damage. Nevertheless, South Africa displayed resilience and held off any potential Moroccan comeback, securing a well-deserved victory.
With this win, South Africa moved to the top of Group K with seven points, followed closely by Morocco with six points and Liberia with one point. While South Africa's qualification campaign has concluded, Morocco still has a match against Liberia to fulfill in September.
Bafana Bafana's triumph over the number one ranked team on the continent signals their growth and ambition as they aim to make a significant impact at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Under the guidance of coach Hugo Broos, South Africa's national team has demonstrated promising potential, leaving fans hopeful for a successful campaign in the upcoming tournament.
