Ceremony Matcha Bar Opens In Cape Town
A new space for ritual, flavour and community
Ceremony Matcha Bar Opens In Cape Town
This September, Ceremony Matcha Bar opens its windows on the Sea Point Promenade, steps from the Atlantic Ocean and at the heart of Cape Town’s wellness culture. It’s imagined as a space for ritual, presence and community – a place where the coastal energy meets Ceremony’s world of wellbeing and calm.
For Mikayla McClean, who founded Ceremony Matcha in 2022, the bar marks a natural next step in the evolution of her brand. Over the past three years, she has introduced South Africans to the quiet power of Ceremonial Grade Matcha, sourcing sustainable and premium blends directly from Kagoshima, Japan, and cultivating a loyal community drawn to matcha as both a daily ritual and a lifestyle.

A window into Ceremony’s world, the Matcha Bar extends this philosophy into a physical space. Its considered menu has been developed in collaboration with Michelin-trained chef Kira Jacobs, blending Japanese inspiration with modern South African sensibilities. Alongside Ceremony’s signature blends are seasonal creations, designed to highlight the depth and versatility of this centuries-old Japanese tea – from layered matcha lattes to roasted hōjicha infused with chai spices, delicate cold brews lifted with honey and florals, and savoury bakes elevated with Japanese shichimi togarashi. Every element of the menu has been thoughtfully considered and crafted to reflect Ceremony’s philosophy: intentional, minimal and deeply sensory.
Beyond the counter, it’s conceived as a point of community where neighbours, friends and curious newcomers can gather in the shared rhythm of being. “Ceremony has always been about more than matcha,” says Mikayla. “It’s about creating moments of presence and connection. The bar is an extension of that – a place to pause, sip and savour.”
Now, her focus shifts to creating a dedicated space for intentional, slow living and meaningful exchange. From morning rituals to yoga flows, sound journeys, collaborative pop-ups and curated gatherings, the space brings Ceremony’s wellness-first ethos to life. With community at its heart, the bar offers a platform for connection and shared presence.
Positioned along the Promenade, the bar’s interior mirrors the slow, grounding energy of the coastline, combining minimal Japanese influences with soft coastal textures. Travertine surfaces, natural wood, linen wallpaper and muted tones come together to create a calming, considered space that celebrates the beauty of simplicity while inviting connection.
Ceremony’s Matcha Bar is open daily from 6:30 am, inviting the Cape Town community, and beyond, to pause, sip and savour.
