International sensation, Ego Ella May set to headline this year’s Queertopia.za festival in Johannesburg

Award-winning singer-songwriter Ego Ella May will be headlining the third installment of Queertopia.za alongside South African greats such as Langa Mavusa, Zoe Modiga, Bongeziwe Mabandla among other artists in this year’s line-up. 

21 January 2025, Johannesburg - Joburg’s most anticipated queer festival, Queertopia.za, is coming back with a bang and this time with an international act guaranteed to get the city talking. Following a successful event in 2024 featuring electrifying and much talked about performances by Thandiswa Mazwai and Buhlebendalo just to name a few, this year’s line-up features international singer-songwriter Ego Ella May who will be headlining the festival and have everyone lining up to get their tickets.

Renowned for her unique ability to blend jazz, R&B, and neo-soul, Ego Ella May has captivated audiences worldwide with her poetic lyrics and smooth, emotive vocals. Her critically acclaimed debut album ”Honey For Wounds” earned her widespread recognition, including a prestigious MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act in 2020. 

With a discography rooted in introspection, self-discovery, and a profound connection to her craft—including her latest release, FIELDNOTES: COMPLETE—Ego Ella May creates music that transcends genres. Her work offers listeners a deeply immersive and transformative experience, showcasing her exceptional artistry and soulful storytelling.

Queertopia.za is the brainchild of Andiswa Dlamini and Kefiloe Siwisa, who under their entity Other Village People, have continuously made strides in creating a safe and inclusive community through their events for the LGBTQIA+ folk and allies in South Africa. 

Queertopia.za will be taking place at the historic Constitutional Hill located in Johannesburg on the 1st and 2nd of March 2025. Constitutional Hill has been home to Queertopia.za for the past three years as it serves as a reminder about South Africa’s journey to democracy and has been endorsing the rights of all citizens which speaks to the role that Queertopia.za plays in upholding human rights for the queer community specifically. 

The festival boasts an exciting range of activities, from music, art, food and wellness experiences, ensuring there's something for everyone. This year’s music line-up features the likes of Bongeziwe Mabandla, Langa Mavuso, Lia Butler, Zoe Modiga, DJ Tshegu, Litsmo, Dato Seiko and many more.

For those attending Queertopia.za for the first time this year, on the opening day of the festival , the Queertopia.za flag is raised as an ode to celebrating queer lives and allies who continue to make it their mission to serve, protect, represent and love those in the community. The event's mission is to foster connection and inclusivity, free from judgment based on race, class, gender, body image, homophobia, transphobia, or any form of harassment.
