NYAKAZA DANCE & THEATRE FESTIVAL
The idea was developed by former dancer/choreographer of the late George Mxolisi Khumalo who made an impact in Thabiso’s dancing career and other dancers & choreographers in Soweto in the early 2000. NYAKAZA DANCE & THEATRE FESTIVAL is part of celebrating George Khumalo’s dream & legacy to have a space & platform where artists can meet and share different ideas in Soweto with their audience.
Nyakaza Dance & Theatre Festival is a biennale platform created as part of a solution to the pain & problems experienced by dance & theatre practitioners who struggle to have a platform to showcase their works and cannot afford to perform in different festivals around the country.
It is mainly designed to celebrate, honour dance choreographers and Theatre makers, through different performances in Soweto, to preserve and provide the culture of arts, inspiration, network opportunities & employment for Theatre & Dance works by showcasing them to our audience.
Since the sector has been hit hard during covid 19 in 2020 different festivals were forced to close down, while most artists lost employment opportunities, we believe the festival will be catalyst to employment opportunities for both artists and local businesses
.
MAIN OBJECTIVES
To add value in the creative sector and sustaining Dancers and Theatre makers around Gauteng to create more network opportunities while educating our community audiences on theatre and social issues that will be showcased during the festival.
To collaborate with other festivals, for festival directors to come to our festival and select different performances to be shown in their festivals. This method will create employment and empower artists while sustaining the creative sector economy in South Africa.
