PSL Transfer Updates: Shaping the Future of South African Football
As the 2022/23 season comes to a close, South African football clubs are gearing up for a new chapter. The off-season transfer window is set to open on July 1, heralding the start of the 2023/24 campaign. Here are the latest updates on player transfers and club strategies from the Premier Soccer League (PSL):
Mamelodi Sundowns:
Mamelodi Sundowns are seeing changes in their squad. Attacking midfielder Gift Motupa, who joined the club from Bidvest Wits in 2020, is reportedly on the move. Struggling to secure regular playing time, Motupa is evaluating his options for the upcoming season. Additionally, defender Brian Onyango's contract is set to expire, leaving his future uncertain. Lesedi Kapinga is also facing an uncertain future after expressing his desire for a transfer during the January window.
However, Sundowns are determined to retain the services of Sphelele Mkhulise, and discussions about a contract extension are underway. The club aims to secure a new two-year deal for the 27-year-old Bafana Bafana international.
Kaizer Chiefs:
Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly secured the services of Mduduzi Mdantsane from Cape Town City by accepting an offer of R3.5 million. Mdantsane, who has made over 100 appearances for City, was the subject of a previous move to Chiefs in January. The move was deferred as City triggered his one-year contract extension, leading to the substantial transfer fee.
Njabulo Ngcobo is among the players expected to be offloaded by Amakhosi.
Orlando Pirates:
Orlando Pirates' centre-back Olisa Ndah is set to stay with the club for the upcoming season, according to his representative, Mike Makaab. Despite facing injuries during the last campaign, Ndah remains committed to the Buccaneers. The central defender will face competition from emerging talent Sandile Mthethwa and the potential return of loaned-out player Thabiso Sesane.
Pirates coach Jose Riveiro revealed the club's plans to engage in discussions with loaned players from other teams, aiming to bolster their squad for the upcoming CAF Champions League season. Following their second-place finish in the DStv Premiership standings, the Buccaneers are preparing for a demanding 2023/24 season, including the Africa Cup of Nations in January/February 2024.
Riveiro emphasized effective squad management and the need to ensure players are readily available for the challenges ahead. The club is in talks with loaned players and those who spent the season with other teams, evaluating their needs and individual development.
Cape Town City FC:
Cape Town City FC is making moves in the transfer market. They have secured Khanyisa Mayo's services until 2028 and extended Marc van Heerden's stay by one year. In terms of squad reduction, the club has released Wayde Lekay and attacking duo Jordan Bender and Bertrand Mani. Additionally, they have signed Tshegofatso Nyama from TS Galaxy and DR Congo youth international Ramazani Tshimanga.
With the upcoming season presenting new challenges and competitions, South African football is in a state of transition, as clubs make strategic moves to strengthen their squads and shape their futures. Stay tuned for more updates as the transfer window unfolds.
