Born in Johannesburg on 26 July 1996, Stacey-Lee May is widely recognized as one of South Africa’s first female Spinning and Stunt drivers. Starting out at 16, she first saw the sport of spinning as an escape from being bullied at school.

A lot has changed since then and Stacey has made some big moves, from staring in huge advertising campaigns to competing in the Netflix series Hyperdrive, which aired in 2019.

Stacey-Lee May, also known as the “Queen of Smoke,” is a South African professional car spinner and stunt driver. She is known for her dynamic spinning and drifting skills, and for her success in a male-dominated motorsport. Stacey-Lee has gained recognition for her performances in various events, including Netflix’s “Hyperdrive”. 

• Early Career and Nickname:

  Stacey-Lee started spinning at the age of 16 and gained the nickname “Queen of Smoke” after winning a local spinning competition four years in a row, according to News24. 

   
• Breaking Barriers:

  She is one of the few female spinners who have successfully transitioned spinning into a formal career. Stacey-Lee has overcome stereotypes and misconceptions about women in the motorsport industry, according to Art of Superwoman. 

   
• Family Support:

  Her family has been a key part of her journey, with her mother acting as her manager and her father involved in transporting the spin car. 

   
• Multi-Talented:

  Besides spinning, Stacey-Lee also does drifting and stunt driving, enjoying the variety and challenges these disciplines offer, according to News24.
