Thato Molamu takes a break from the silver screen to pursue business interests

Actor to help champion Africa’s digital transformation

Commenting on his decision to focus solely on business, Thato said: “Acting will always have a space in my heart and my years of acting in theatre, television and working on radio nurtured my love for storytelling. It also introduced the world to Thato Molamu, for which I will always be
eternally grateful. However, I believe there is more I can offer the industry and the African continent as a whole. This is something I’ve wanted to pursue for quite a while and believe the time is right to step away. I believe my entrepreneurial aspirations will benefit more than just
myself and my network – but the continents creative youth.

xx July 2020, Johannesburg. Popular TV star and presenter, Thato Molamu, better known for his roles on the silver screen has announced his hiatus from creating on-screen magic to focus fulltime on the business of film and digital content creation through his company: Gateway Media, an innovative digital media company changing the way Africa consumes and engages with rich content.
The decision follows the rapid growth of Gateway Media, which in a short timespan has established itself as a pioneering media company having already won several international awards.

Known widely in the film and television industry, Thato is a man who wears many hats, having ventured into business, philanthropy, public policy, social entrepreneurship and most recently as
host of Conrad TV, a conversational radio television platform that intuitively exploits the best of both worlds by integrating radio and television into a simultaneous, single audio-visual offering. As host, Thato engages with industry stalwarts and novices alike on issues affecting South Africans of all walks of life.

Through his Leaders in Motion Academy (LIMA), a digital creative skills academy and production hub based in the township of Eersterust in Tshwane, Thato is helping normalise access to digital creative
(technical) and business skills for township-based creative entrepreneurs.

“The business of Digital content creation is where the world is headed and there is no turning back. With three of the five fastest growing economies in Africa, it is essential that we give the youth the necessary skills and tools to thrive in a changing world. This is an ideal time to prepare our youth
and ensure that we meet standards in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution across all industries. Covid-19 has not only made this a need but a necessity.”, concluded Thato

Thato’s work is also extended through his Foundation – The Thato Molamu Foundation, with
education, health and the creative industries as the focus areas for the foundation.
