BREAKING NEWS: The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) will on Tuesday, 31 October 2023, posthumously confer Chief Augustine Butana Chaane Motsepe, the father of mining magnate and Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe, with an honorary degree.

The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Tshwane University of Technology, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke will be hosting the Motsepe Family for the Honorary Degree Celebration on Tuesday, 31 October 2023.

ABOUT Chief Augustine Butana Chaane Motsepe, (92 at the time of his death in 2007)

Chief Augustine Butana Chaane Motsepe Led his tribe, Bakgatla-Ba-Mmakau, in successful protests to force a Canadian company, Leuka Minerals, to pay royalties on vanadium being mined on the tribe's land. He was seen as the backbone of one of South Africa's most prominent families of achievers.

In the early days Motsepe Snr ran shopping centres in North West.

Among his children are daughter Bridgette Radebe, a mining executive married to Transport Minister Jeff Radebe; son Patrice, said to be South Africa's richest black man; and daughter Dr Tshepo Motsepe, married to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

  1. ABC was not a Chief and he was nowhere closer to could have become a Chief. Please don’t distort history, TUT is an Academic institution and it must always ensure that they verify facts before publishing them, otherwise you’ll lose your integrity.
