Amayaga –The  New Age Of Amapiano

Amapiano has become the official language of South Africa, and this young up and coming group called Amayaga are putting their own spin to the popular genre. Born and raised in Orlando West, Soweto: Villa, 4K, DK, Fox & HotStrings are on a mission to inspire and prove that nothing is impossible. 2021 was many things to all of us but to Amayaga it was the beginning of an era and the beginning of their record label Hood-keys Records which the group is currently signed under.

The name Amayaga was derived from the popular alcoholic beverage Jägermeister, the liqueur is a part of the Amayaga lifestyle and one day while making hits in the studio the name came to them. They boys have dreams of one day performing on large stages with their icons such as Maphorisa and Kabza De Small. Amayaga always push and strive for perfection in everything they do like pending hours in the studio until the morning. Amayaga believe in the importance of pushing for what they believe in and inspiring those around them, especially the youth of Soweto.

The group want to show their peers that all their dreams are accessible if they just believe in themselves and never give up.

Breaking the mould they decided to use live instruments in their rendition of the Amapiano genre. While recording and performing, Amayaga use the drums, an electric guitar and a glass bottle and infuse them into their unique rap style and amapiano production. These young, creative story tellers incorporate Kasi culture and lifestyle into their lyrics, giving the listener a view into the life of a Soweto youth. Listening to their sound and their play on words, one can definitely tell where some of their influence stems from; the likes of Amaroto (Zuma & Reece Madlisa) and the late talented Mpura, just to name a few. Amapiano has in a way allowed the resurrection of Kwaito as elements of the genre can be picked up in Amayaga songs like “Top 5” and “Thela”, where they tell stories about women, the night life and their ambitiousness.

The Amayaga live sessions are something to behold, their togetherness and vibe draws you in and their music and talent makes you want to listen. HotStrings, who is their guitar player, incorporates his riffs into the songs while Fox creates magic with the drum and a glass bottle. All this talent combined makes for one amazing experience, performing in and around Soweto, these young men amaze with their ability to understand music in their own unique way.

Reminiscent of Kwaito artists in their prime, Amayaga’s rap skills are nostalgic and take you back, fused with their own ideas of what today is about and what they consider important to share, Amayaga are superstars in their own right.

Amapiano is evolving just as every other genre does and this group of talented boys are started the movement. A sound only they can produce, with stories only they can tell, Amayaga are about to change the game in more ways than one, with their skills on the instruments and their talents on the mic and behind the decks; Amayaga are what all music lovers deserve.
