An evening of savoir-faire: Africa toasts with Moët & Chandon in celebration of Champagne Day

On October 25, 2024, Moët & Chandon marked Champagne Day with a dazzling celebration of art, craftsmanship, savoir-faire, and ingenuity. Set against the backdrop of The Forum White Light in Lanseria, the evening brought together artisans, trendsetters and creators from various disciplines, to share the stories that inspire their passions.

Embracing the theme of “Endless Creativity in Craftsmanship”, the brand’s signature elegance was seen in the gold, black and white décor, while the guests’ fashion reflected their personal interpretations of “Glamorously Crafted”. The evening was graciously hosted by Thebe Magugu, the acclaimed South African designer, who arrived dressed in one of his own designs.

For 281 years, the Maison has been synonymous with exceptional winemaking through its honouring of terroir, its craftsmanship, and its savoir-faire. Moët & Chandon is also recognised as an innovator, in the cellar and in the vineyards, with sustainability at the heart of its vision for the future.

These unique qualities were highlighted as part of this year’s Champagne Day celebrations spanning eight African countries, as the evening unfolded in three distinct phases, guiding guests through an immersive exploration of Moët & Chandon,

The first phase centred on history, with a heritage wall that highlighted the legacy of Moët & Chandon. Guests were able to trace the brand’s centuries-old influence in the champagne industry and its pioneering role in the evolution of champagne-making. Guests were then invited to share in a unique dining experience. The table decor beautifully echoed the evening’s theme, allowing guests to step into a Parisian chic-inspired dining setting embodying the elegance of Moët & Chandon fused with accents of modernity.

Inspired by the meticulous artistry behind every bottle of Moët & Chandon, the chefs brought the creative process to life with a menu that featured sustainably sourced seafood. As glasses were filled, Moët & Chandon President, Sibylle Scherer reflected on the brand’s rich heritage since 1743. This year's theme, "Endless Creativity in Craftsmanship," highlights the blend of timeless techniques and bold innovation that defines their legacy. She emphasized the importance of honouring African talent and creativity, showcasing collaborations with artists like Thebe Magugu, whose unique perspectives inspire a new savoir-faire. Scherer also reaffirmed Moët & Chandon’s commitment to sustainability through their Natura Nostra initiative, ensuring that respect for nature remains at the heart of their craftsmanship.

Scherer continued by sharing her reflections on the Moët & Chandon 870 glass, highlighting its significance in enhancing the champagne experience. “As we celebrate together, I want to honour the Moët & Chandon 870 glass, designed to reveal an astonishing 870,000 bubbles per serving. This iconic glass enhances our champagne experience, capturing effervescence that elevates taste and visual delight. More than just a vessel, it embodies the artistry of winemaking, she noted.”

Host Thebe Magugu shared his interpretation of Moët & Chandon's savoir-faire, inspired by his journey to Épernay earlier in the year. Drawing from the abundance of roses in the region, Magugu envisioned these blooms as garments, capturing their essence in a stunning gradient print: red (love), pink (joy), and white (purity), as he revealed his bespoke creation. “This garment embodies the spirit of endless creativity I experienced in champagne making, where tradition meets modernity and every detail reflects passion and expertise. Inspired by my time in Épernay, it celebrates the vibrant fusion of African artistry and craftsmanship, with each stitch telling a story and every colour resonating with meaning,” he explained.

Suspended on gilded displays for all to admire, his creation featured a bodice resembling rose petals paired with a pleated skirt, merging couture drama with ready-to-wear comfort.

Following Thebe’s speech, a short video showcased the artistry behind the pieces and the experience shared by the 8 African artisans in Épernay, offering guests a rare glimpse into their discovery of Moёt & Chandon and the meticulous craftsmanship involved in the creation of their piece. Guests also shared the opportunity to celebrate their personal achievements of the year by writing down a toast to their achievement, to revisit as they reach new milestones throughout the years to come.

The event culminated in a vibrant homage to celebration and storytelling, with a performance from Muneyi and the unveiling of the Épernay to Africa photo wall. Just as every bottle of Moët & Chandon carries with it a story – of tradition, artistry, and passion – we are all storytellers at heart. The collection of memories tells the unique stories of the talented craftsmen and craftswomen who journeyed to the heart of Champagne, Épernay, to experience the savoir-faire of Moët & Chandon; and of the incredible guests, who brought that same spirit of celebration with them in Africa.

With a toast that celebrated craft, community, and joy, the event served as a memorable tribute to Moët & Chandon’s commitment to blending heritage, innovation, and festivity, leaving an unforgettable impression on all who attended.
