BIRKENSTOCK MARKS 250 YEARS WITH ART & SOLE AT 44 ON STANLEY

Birkenstock celebrates 250 years of shoemaking tradition with an immersive concept store bringing heritage, craftsmanship and South African creativity together in Johannesburg.

BIRKENSTOCK is marking 250 years of shoemaking tradition with Art & Sole, an immersive concept store at 44 on Stanley in Johannesburg, bringing the heritage of the German footwear brand into one of the city’s creative hubs.

Spanning approximately 280 square metres and featuring a striking double-volume ceiling, the temporary space was designed to take visitors deeper into the BIRKENSTOCK world while creating a platform for local artistic expression.

Rather than simply functioning as a retail space, Art & Sole brings together the brand’s long-standing shoemaking heritage, its iconic footbed and the work of South African artists and designers.

Among the creatives featured are Mpho Vackier, Naledi Modupi and Mandla Thabethe, whose work gives the concept store a distinctly South African identity.

BIRKENSTOCK Art & Sole at 44 on Stanley

Located at 44 on Stanley, one of Johannesburg’s established creative and lifestyle destinations, Art & Sole was created as an experiential celebration of the brand’s history.

The space reflects BIRKENSTOCK’s evolution while placing its craftsmanship at the centre of the experience. For a brand whose identity has been built around its distinctive footbed and long-standing approach to shoemaking, the concept offers visitors an opportunity to engage with that history beyond the finished product.

The Johannesburg activation also highlights the relationship between global fashion brands and South Africa’s growing creative community.

250 Years of BIRKENSTOCK Craftsmanship

BIRKENSTOCK traces its shoemaking heritage back 250 years, with generations of craftsmanship contributing to the development of the brand as it is known today.

At the heart of its footwear is the original BIRKENSTOCK footbed, an anatomically shaped construction designed around the natural form of the foot.

The footbed has become one of the most recognisable elements of BIRKENSTOCK footwear and remains central to the brand’s identity.

What Makes the BIRKENSTOCK Footbed Different?

The signature BIRKENSTOCK footbed is designed with an anatomically shaped profile that supports the foot and helps distribute pressure across the sole.

Its construction traditionally incorporates materials including cork, latex, suede and jute, while BIRKENSTOCK footwear also uses materials such as leather, textiles and synthetic or blended fabrics across different collections.

The combination of materials and construction has helped make the footbed one of the defining features of BIRKENSTOCK sandals and shoes.

From Sandals to a Global Footwear Icon

While BIRKENSTOCK is closely associated with its classic sandals, the brand has expanded its footwear offering significantly over the years.

Its designs now extend across sandals, shoes, boots and other silhouettes, while retaining the footbed technology and design philosophy that have become synonymous with the name.

The result is a balance between heritage and contemporary style — something that has allowed BIRKENSTOCK to remain relevant across different generations and fashion communities.

South African Creativity Meets BIRKENSTOCK Heritage

A key part of Art & Sole is the involvement of South African creatives.

The work of Mpho Vackier, Naledi Modupi and Mandla Thabethe brings a local perspective to a celebration that could otherwise have been centred solely around the brand’s European history.

That intersection between craftsmanship, design and contemporary South African creativity gives the Johannesburg concept store its own character.

For visitors, Art & Sole becomes more than an exhibition of footwear. It becomes a meeting point between fashion, art, design and culture.

Why 44 on Stanley?

44 on Stanley has become known as a Johannesburg destination where food, fashion, design, art and creative culture intersect.

Its location makes it a natural setting for a concept such as Art & Sole, allowing BIRKENSTOCK to position its 250-year heritage within a contemporary South African creative environment.

The temporary activation also reflects the changing way global fashion and lifestyle brands are creating physical experiences — spaces designed not only to sell products, but to tell stories around the culture and craftsmanship behind them.

BIRKENSTOCK Art & Sole

Through Art & Sole, BIRKENSTOCK uses its 250-year milestone to look backwards at its shoemaking history while also engaging with the creative landscape of Johannesburg.

The concept store at 44 on Stanley brings together craftsmanship, footwear, art, design and South African creativity, creating an experience that connects the brand’s heritage with a new generation of creatives and consumers.

BIRKENSTOCK’s 250-year journey may have started centuries ago, but Art & Sole shows how that history can continue to evolve in contemporary culture.
