The Madlanga Commission has heard explosive allegations involving businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk, after it emerged that Matlala allegedly sent Van Wyk a video showing cocaine being weighed.

According to information presented during the commission proceedings on Monday, 22 June 2026, the video reportedly shows bricks of cocaine being counted. The video was allegedly sent by Matlala to Mike van Wyk, and shortly thereafter, Matlala appears to ask Van Wyk to find him a good price.
Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson took the commission through the WhatsApp exchanges between the two men. In his written responses, Van Wyk denied ever receiving the video. However, Advocate Chaskalson rejected that explanation, telling the commission that the evidence before it contradicts Van Wyk’s version.
“There was no trace of the video on the chats between Mr Matlala and the third party and indeed there is no trace of the video anywhere in the phone other than between Mr Matlala and Mr Van Wyk. If one wants to frame the two, they would not have access to the video because the only place on the phone where the video appears is between Matlala and Van Wyk,” said Chaskalson.
Authorities have not yet independently verified the contents of the video, and both parties have not issued detailed public statements addressing the allegation at the time of publication.
Mike van Wyk’s Testimony Postponed Due to Illness
Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk was expected to testify before the Madlanga Commission on Monday regarding his links to Matlala, as well as alleged corruption involving a R360 million SAPS healthcare tender and the EMPD.
However, his appearance was postponed after his legal team applied for a postponement, citing health challenges. On Monday, Sandy du Plessis, the attorney representing Van Wyk, informed the commission that he was unable to testify as scheduled.
“When we were consulting Van Wyk yesterday, he suffered yet again from severe panic attacks,” Du Plessis said. “Earlier this week, on June 17, he saw a psychiatrist. Following the consultation, the doctor placed him on medication, which subsequently had to be changed.” She added that the psychiatrist recommended Van Wyk be admitted to the psychiatric unit at Jacaranda Hospital.
The commission was provided with an affidavit and medical certificate from Van Wyk’s psychiatrist, who is reportedly treating him for panic attacks. A new date for his testimony will be scheduled.
Commission Proceeds Without Van Wyk
The Madlanga Commission confirmed that proceedings would continue in Van Wyk’s absence, with other witnesses providing testimony relevant to the ongoing investigation.
Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson noted that the commission would be unable to hear Van Wyk’s testimony on Monday due to his health. To prevent losing a full day, he proposed that the evidence be placed on record immediately, allowing Van Wyk to respond to it upon his return.
“What we would propose, if Van Wyk is not fit to testify today, is that his appearance be postponed to another day, but we use today to put the evidence we intend to question him on—such as WhatsApp chats and videos—before the commission,” Chaskalson explained.
He said Van Wyk will be given an opportunity to respond to Monday’s sitting and can file a supplementary affidavit in light of the proceedings, with a deadline of 6 July.
