DStv and Showmax Subscribers Get Relief as MultiChoice Absorbs VAT Hike
Good News: DStv & Showmax Prices Mostly Unaffected by VAT Increase in 2025
DStv and Showmax Subscribers Get Relief: In his 2025 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced a two-stage VAT increase, with the first 0.5% hike taking effect on 1 May 2025 (from 15% to 15.5%) and another 0.5% increase scheduled for 1 April 2026 (bringing VAT to 16%).
While many companies, including Vodacom, FNB, Discovery, and Rain, have warned customers about impending price adjustments, MultiChoice has delivered some good news for DStv and Showmax subscribers.
Which DStv and Showmax Prices Will Increase?
MultiChoice confirmed that only specific DStv packages will see a price adjustment due to the VAT increase, while most Showmax plans and other DStv services will remain unchanged.
Here’s the breakdown:
DStv Packages with Price Adjustments (From 1 May 2025)
- DStv Premium → R983 (up from R979)
- DStv Compact Plus → R662 (up from R659)
- DStv Compact → R481 (up from R479)
- DStv Family → R340 (up from R339)
- DStv Access → R151 (up from R150)
The increases are minimal (only 0.5%) and rounded to the nearest rand.
DStv & Showmax Services with NO Price Changes
MultiChoice has absorbed the VAT increase for the following:
✅ DStv EasyView – Remains at R30
✅ Showmax – All plans stay the same
✅ DStv Stream – No price adjustment
✅ DStv Contract Customers – No increase
✅ Add Movies & Box Office Rentals – Prices unchanged
This means Showmax subscribers (including Entertainment, Premier League, and bundled plans) won’t see any price hikes in May.
Why Is MultiChoice Absorbing the VAT Increase for Some Services?
MultiChoice stated that it is mindful of the financial impact on consumers and has chosen to cover the additional VAT costs for certain products. This decision provides relief to customers, especially in a challenging economic climate.
Final Thoughts: What This Means for Subscribers
- If you’re on DStv Premium, Compact, or Family, expect a small increase (less than R5).
- Showmax, DStv Stream, and EasyView users won’t pay more.
- The second VAT increase in April 2026 may bring further adjustments, but MultiChoice’s current approach suggests it may continue shielding customers where possible.
For now, this is positive news for most DStv and Showmax subscribers!
