JAY-Z IN 8: Rick Rubin Goes Inside the Mind of Hip-Hop’s Greatest Storyteller
JAY-Z is about to tell his story in a way we’ve rarely seen before.
The Brooklyn-born rap icon is the subject of JAŸ-Z IN 8, an eight-part HBO documentary series directed by legendary producer Rick Rubin, with the two sitting down for an intimate conversation about JAY-Z’s music, lyrics, life experiences and creative process.
The series premieres September 18, 2026, with the first two episodes arriving on HBO and HBO Max, followed by two new episodes every Friday through October 9.
And the choice of Rubin as the person sitting across from JAY-Z makes this much more interesting than a standard celebrity documentary.

The trailer immediately establishes the tone.
Rather than presenting JAY-Z through a conventional greatest-hits documentary format, JAŸ-Z IN 8 places him in conversation with Rubin, allowing the two to dig into the experiences and creative decisions behind his music.
At one point, the conversation turns toward pain and creativity, with Rubin challenging JAY-Z on whether difficult experiences are necessary for an artist to create meaningful work.
JAY-Z’s response gets to the heart of the series: if the pain is there, you use it.
That exchange suggests JAŸ-Z IN 8 isn’t simply interested in what happened during JAY-Z’s career.
It’s interested in why he created the way he did.
Why Rick Rubin Is the Perfect Person to Interview JAY-Z
Rick Rubin isn’t approaching JAY-Z as an outsider.
The two have their own history.
Rubin produced “99 Problems” from JAY-Z’s 2003 album The Black Album, bringing his minimalist production style to one of the rapper’s most recognisable records. Rubin also worked with JAY-Z as a creative consultant around Magna Carta Holy Grail.
That history gives the conversations another layer.
Rubin understands the studio.
He understands production.
And, perhaps most importantly, he understands the creative process.
So instead of simply asking JAY-Z what happened, Rubin can ask why.
Why that lyric?
Why that beat?
Why that album?
Why that decision?
Why did a particular moment become a song?
That’s where JAŸ-Z IN 8 could become something special.
JAY-Z Has Three Decades of Stories to Tell
The timing of the documentary is significant.
JAY-Z is celebrating 30 years of Reasonable Doubt in 2026, the album that introduced Shawn Carter as one of hip-hop’s most formidable new voices.
Since then, his career has expanded across music, fashion, business and culture.
From Marcy Projects in Brooklyn to Roc-A-Fella Records, Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album, Roc Nation and his global business empire, JAY-Z has spent three decades transforming himself from rapper to cultural institution.
And unlike many artists, he has documented much of that evolution himself through his lyrics.
JAŸ-Z IN 8 gives him the opportunity to look back at those lyrics and unpack the person who wrote them.
From Reasonable Doubt to The Blueprint
The documentary arrives during a particularly nostalgic period for JAY-Z fans.
2026 also marks 25 years of The Blueprint, another landmark album in his catalogue.
JAY-Z has been revisiting both eras throughout the year, making JAŸ-Z IN 8 feel less like an isolated documentary and more like another chapter in a broader celebration of his legacy.
But the series isn’t expected to simply run through his discography chronologically.
Its format gives Rubin room to explore the stories, emotions and creative decisions behind the music.
Eight Episodes. One Conversation.
The concept behind JAŸ-Z IN 8 is surprisingly simple:
Eight episodes.
JAY-Z.
Rick Rubin.
The official description says the series explores JAY-Z’s music, lyrics, life experiences and creative process.
That’s potentially a lot of ground to cover.
JAY-Z has released more than a dozen studio albums, built one of hip-hop’s most celebrated catalogues and spent decades navigating fame, wealth, relationships, fatherhood and business.
Eight episodes could give the documentary enough room to move beyond the familiar stories.
Daniel Kaluuya Is Also Behind the Project
The documentary has an impressive creative team behind it.
JAY-Z, Rick Rubin and Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya serve as executive producers, with Leila Mattimore and David Rohde as producers.
The series is produced by HBO Documentary Films and Rubin’s Tetragrammaton banner.
Kaluuya’s involvement also adds another interesting cultural connection, bringing one of cinema’s most respected contemporary actors into a project centred on one of music’s biggest figures.
When Does JAY-Z IN 8 Premiere?
JAŸ-Z IN 8 premieres Friday, September 18, 2026.
HBO will debut the first two episodes on September 18, followed by two episodes each Friday.
The final two episodes are scheduled for October 9, 2026.

Why JAY-Z IN 8 Could Be One of 2026’s Biggest Music Documentaries
JAY-Z doesn’t need another documentary to prove his influence.
The catalogue already exists.
The awards already exist.
The businesses already exist.
The cultural impact is already there.
What’s interesting about JAŸ-Z IN 8 is the possibility of hearing JAY-Z explain the thinking behind it all.
After 30 years of telling stories through songs, one of hip-hop’s greatest storytellers is finally sitting down for eight episodes and talking through the story himself.
And with Rick Rubin asking the questions, this could go much deeper than a standard career retrospective.
JAŸ-Z IN 8 premieres September 18, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
