Microsoft Launches African Startups AI Fest to Empower Entrepreneurs Across Africa
Johannesburg, South Africa – Microsoft has announced the launch of its inaugural African Startups AI Fest, a groundbreaking event designed to help startups across Africa accelerate growth through artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation.
The announcement was made during GITEX Africa in Marrakech, Morocco, with the event scheduled to take place on 6 June 2024 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The hybrid event will also offer virtual access to entrepreneurs, developers, engineers, and business leaders from across the continent.

The event comes at a time when African startups are navigating a challenging investment environment.
Research from the African Tech Startups Funding Report revealed that funding for African technology startups declined after a record-breaking 2022, when 633 startups collectively raised more than $3 billion.
Despite these challenges, Microsoft believes technology and AI can provide new opportunities for innovation and growth.
“In the face of a challenging economic climate, startups across Africa have demonstrated remarkable resilience,” Barnard said.
She emphasized that AI has the potential to help entrepreneurs streamline operations, unlock new markets, and create scalable business models capable of driving long-term success.

Fintech company M-KOPA has utilized cloud-based IoT tools and AI-powered automation to expand access to financial services across East Africa.
The company provides insurance products, loans, smartphones, solar energy systems, and motorbike financing to millions of underserved customers.
