New Podcast Studio Launch Celebrates South Africa’s Growing Creator Industry
In a dynamic celebration of South Africa’s rapidly growing podcast industry, Spotify’s highly anticipated podcast studio launch unfolded this past week, drawing a vibrant mix of podcasters, creators, and industry insiders. This event comes as the number of creators producing video podcasts has surged by nearly 70% since 2023, with almost one in four Spotify podcast listeners now tuning into video shows.
Upon arrival, guests were warmly welcomed and treated to exquisite canapés and drinks, setting the stage for an exciting evening ahead.
Ncebekazi Manzi, Spotify’s Podcast Manager and the visionary behind the launch, encouraged hosts to capitalise on the studio’s cutting-edge video capabilities. She emphasised the growing influence of video podcasts in South Africa’s burgeoning podcast scene. “Audiences are embracing video podcasts like never before, and this new studio is part of our evolution to better serve creators and help them thrive.”

The event fostered an open dialogue, as both seasoned podcasters and emerging talent shared insights on the production challenges they face and the importance of collaboration in overcoming them. Guests took turns introducing themselves, speaking passionately about their creative journeys and the inspiration behind their shows.
In attendance were notable figures such as Thato Rampedi, host of Seated with Lebo and Thato Rampedi, where he and his friends share humorous yet reflective takes on life, and Gugulethu Nyatsumba, whose popular podcast After School Is After School motivates and uplifts her audience.
Guests were guided through the impressive video capabilities of the brand-new studio at Rosebank Mall. The space boasts two recording rooms – one designed for formal interviews, the other offering a cosy, relaxed environment for conversational content. The sleek, modern aesthetic is complemented by canvases showcasing well-known creators, adding a personal touch to the space.
Speaking at the launch, Zama Mkhize, host of What In The 20s, expressed her excitement: “It’s surreal to know that someone believes in what I do. I still record on my phone, and now I’ll have access to a space with the equipment to bring my vision to life.”
As the tour progressed, creators could be overheard brainstorming future episodes and envisioning how the new space would elevate their content. The launch wasn’t just a showcase – it became a hub of creative energy, where South Africa’s podcast talent came together to dream up new possibilities.
By uniting the podcast community for this event, Spotify reaffirmed its commitment to being a key player in the industry, providing creators with the tools to succeed.
“This launch is only the beginning, and it’s clear that South Africa’s podcast scene is on an exciting upward trajectory,” Manzi concluded.
