NTS X DIESEL TRACKS SA PRESENTS HYPOESTES

NTS X DIESEL TRACKS SA PRESENTS HYPOESTES

NTS x Diesel Tracks SA proudly presents HYPOESTES – a Cape Town-based DJ known for her percussive, joyful, and unapologetically messy sound. Drawing on queer life, Cape Flats sonic heritage, Drexciya’s mythology, and transatlantic histories, she uses rhythm as memory and resistance, always anchored by the ocean.

Who Is HYPOESTES?

HYPOESTES is more than a DJ – she is a storyteller, an archivist, and a force of nature behind the decks. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, her sound defies easy categorisation. It is:

  • Percussive – rhythm-driven and body-moving
  • Joyful – celebratory, uplifting, and playful
  • Unapologetically messy – layered, textured, and gloriously chaotic
  • Ocean-anchored – the sea as a grounding force in her work

Her sets are alive and in motion – soulful, playful, and immersive – blending research-driven sound with the raw energy of queer nightlife. Each performance is a journey through memory, resistance, and collective joy.

The Influences Behind the Sound

HYPOESTES draws from a rich tapestry of references that shape her unique musical identity:

Cape Flats Sonic Heritage

The Cape Flats – a sprawling area outside Cape Town – has a deep, complex musical history. From goema rhythms to garage, kwaito to punk, the sonic landscape of the Cape Flats is one of resilience, creativity, and defiance. HYPOESTES channels these influences into her sets, honouring the sounds of her home.

Drexciya’s Mythology

Drexciya – the legendary Detroit electro duo – created a mythic underwater world where the unborn children of pregnant women thrown overboard during the Middle Passage live. This Afrofuturist mythology of water, memory, and liberation runs deep in HYPOESTES’ work, with the ocean as both anchor and symbol.

Transatlantic Histories

Her music engages with the movement of people, sound, and culture across the Atlantic – from Africa to the Americas and back. This transatlantic dialogue shapes her track selection, her rhythmic language, and her understanding of electronic music as a diasporic conversation.

Queer Nightlife

At the heart of HYPOESTES’ practice is queer nightlife – spaces of liberation, experimentation, and community. Her sets are designed for the dancefloor as a site of joy, resistance, and radical self-expression.

Rhythm as Memory and Resistance

For HYPOESTES, rhythm is never just rhythm. It is memory – a way of holding history in the body. It is resistance – a refusal to be silenced or sanitised. And it is always, always anchored by the ocean – a reminder of where she comes from and where sound can take us.

“Her sets are alive and in motion – soulful, playful, and immersive – blending research-driven sound with the raw energy of queer nightlife.”
