The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is shaking up the way millions of taxpayers file their returns in 2025 with the launch of a new feature: ‘Express Access’ on eFiling.
This streamlined tool aims to make auto-assessments faster, tax compliance easier, and refunds quicker. Whether you’re a salaried worker, freelancer, or part-time hustler, here’s everything you need to know about SARS’ new digital tax filing upgrades and how they affect you.
What Is SARS ‘Express Access’?
‘Express Access’ is a brand-new eFiling tab that helps taxpayers manage their 2025 Personal Income Tax returns more efficiently.
With this feature, you can:
View your 2025 auto-assessment
Submit previous or current tax returns
Update your contact and banking details
Pay owed tax or receive fast refunds
SARS says the change supports its mission to modernize services and promote better compliance through simplicity.
Tax Season 2025 Key Dates
| Taxpayer Type | Opening Date | Closing Date |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-Assessments | 7 July 2025 | 20 July 2025 |
| Individual | 21 July 2025 | 20 October 2025 |
| Provisional | 21 July 2025 | 19 January 2026 |
| Trusts | 21 July 2025 | 19 January 2026 |
Auto-assessments will start 2 weeks before the official season — if your return is simple, it may already be done for you!
What Are Auto-Assessments?
Auto-assessments are pre-populated tax returns generated by SARS using third-party data (e.g., from your employer, medical aid, or bank).
If you accept it:
No action needed — you’ll either get a refund (within 72 hours), or see how much you owe.
If you don’t accept it:
You must reject the auto-assessment and submit a manual return by the applicable deadline.
Why Updating Your Details Matters
SARS is urging all taxpayers to immediately check and update their:
Contact details (email, phone, etc.)
Banking details
Failure to update these may result in:
Missed refunds
Unreceived notices or payment reminders
Penalties for not responding on time
Most SARS communication now happens exclusively via eFiling or MobiApp, including One-Time Pins (OTPs), audits, payment demands, and document requests.
The SARS “Army” Is Coming
SARS is taking enforcement seriously in 2025. Commissioner Edward Kieswetter confirmed that 1,700 new staff will be hired using a R1 billion budget boost from Treasury — specifically to:
Chase up unpaid taxes via calls/SMS
Clean up outstanding returns from previous years
Recover over R1 billion in debt from non-compliant taxpayers
SARS is prepared to take legal steps if you ignore friendly reminders.
This includes:
Appointing your bank to collect on SARS’ behalf
Applying for civil judgment
Freezing bank accounts or seizing assets
How to Access ‘Express Access’ on eFiling
Step-by-step:
Go to: https://www.sarsefiling.co.za
Log in with your taxpayer credentials
Look for the new “Express” tab on your eFiling dashboard
Review your auto-assessment, edit your banking info, or file past returns
You can also use the SARS MobiApp for the same functions on mobile.
What Tax Experts Say
Tax Consulting SA and other analysts have applauded the new Express system but warn:
“Taxpayers should not confuse automation with immunity. Even if you’re auto-assessed, you remain legally responsible for the accuracy of your return.”
Failing to check your info can result in:
Wrong refund amounts
Unexpected tax bills
Rejections or penalties later
UrbanStreetCulture Tax Tip:
Before clicking accept on your SARS auto-assessment, take 5 minutes to:
Check your IRP5s and bank interest
Review deductions (e.g., medical aid, RA, travel)
Make sure nothing was under-reported
