PUMA x Super Mario 3D All-Stars Collection Brings Mario’s 3D Adventures to Sneakers
Cape Town, South Africa — 17 November 2020 — PUMA and Nintendo are taking one of gaming’s most recognisable characters into streetwear with the Super Mario 3D All-Stars™ collection, a collaboration created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise.
Inspired by Super Mario 64™, Super Mario Sunshine™ and Super Mario Galaxy™, the collection translates some of Mario’s most memorable worlds, characters and visual details into a range of footwear and apparel. PUMA’s lineup includes the Future Rider, Clyde, RS-Fast and RS-Dreamer silhouettes, with each shoe built around a different chapter of Mario’s 3D gaming history.
Future Rider Super Mario 64
The Future Rider Super Mario 64 draws directly from Mario’s first major 3D adventure. Its colour palette references Mario’s instantly recognisable red-and-blue outfit, while details inspired by the game include the Wing Cap, brick elements on the midsole and a wing detail on the heel.
The sneaker also comes with a Super Mario 64 hangtag, giving the design an additional collector-focused touch.
The Future Rider Super Mario 64 was priced at R1,999 in South Africa.
Alongside the footwear, the South African release included pieces such as the Nintendo Knit Short (R1,499), Nintendo Tee (R799), Nintendo Long Sleeve Tee (R999) and AOP Nintendo Hoodie (R1,999).
These products were scheduled to release from 27 November 2020 through PUMA.com and selected retailers including PUMA Select and Egg.
Super Mario Sunshine Goes to the Court
For Super Mario Sunshine, PUMA looked towards the tropical setting of Isle Delfino for inspiration.
The collection included the Clyde Super Mario Sunshine and RS-Dreamer Super Mario Sunshine, with both styles incorporating visual references to the game’s water-filled world, including the F.L.U.D.D. and Shine Sprites.
The RS-Dreamer is particularly notable because it brings J. Cole’s signature basketball silhouette into the Super Mario universe. PUMA had launched the RS-Dreamer earlier in 2020 as Cole’s first signature basketball sneaker, combining PUMA’s RS technology with a design intended to work both on and off the court.
The Super Mario Sunshine RS-Dreamer was also designed with PUMA Hoops technology, making it one of the more unusual crossovers in the collection: a basketball sneaker built around one of Nintendo’s most recognisable gaming worlds.
However, PUMA stated that the Clyde and RS-Dreamer Super Mario Sunshine were exclusive to Foot Locker in the United States, meaning these particular styles were not part of the South African release.
RS-Fast Super Mario Galaxy
Mario’s journey into space gets its own sneaker with the RS-Fast Super Mario Galaxy.
Inspired by the 2007 Nintendo title, the sneaker uses a darker black, purple, white and metallic silver colour palette alongside a galactic-inspired print. Mario’s small but instantly recognisable companion, Luma, appears throughout the design.
The RS-Fast Super Mario Galaxy was priced at R2,899 in South Africa and was scheduled to arrive on 4 December 2020 at PUMA Select.
Future Rider Nintendo Entertainment System
The collection also looked beyond the 3D All-Stars games with a sneaker paying tribute to the console that helped establish Mario as a global gaming icon.
The Future Rider Nintendo Entertainment System™ takes its design cues from the original Nintendo Entertainment System, using the console’s familiar grey, red and black colour combination.
The tongue features artwork referencing the original Super Mario Bros., while additional details include Power and Reset button-inspired elements and a hangtag shaped like the classic NES controller.
The sneaker was scheduled to launch globally on 4 December 2020 and was offered in adult, kids and infant sizing.
A Gaming Collaboration Built for Streetwear
The PUMA x Super Mario collection sits at the intersection of gaming, sneakers and pop culture rather than treating the collaboration as simple character merchandise.
Each silhouette takes a different approach to Mario’s history. The Future Rider looks back to Super Mario 64, the Clyde and RS-Dreamer bring Super Mario Sunshine into PUMA’s basketball and lifestyle universe, while the RS-Fast travels into the space-inspired world of Super Mario Galaxy.
The collection also reflects PUMA’s wider push in 2020 to connect footwear with music, sport and culture. That same year, the brand’s partnership with J. Cole produced the RS-Dreamer, which PUMA described as a sneaker designed to bridge basketball performance and everyday style.
For Mario fans and sneaker collectors, the result was a collection that turned three eras of Nintendo’s 3D platforming history into wearable pieces of gaming culture.
