Adidas Bounces Back Strong After Kanye West Deal Exit

In a significant turnaround, Adidas has announced its emergence from the challenging partnership with rapper Kanye West, projecting profits of €700m (£598m) for 2024. Following the decision to part ways with West, the German sportswear giant has shown resilience, revealing revised figures that surpass initial predictions by €200m.

Adidas attributes this success to a better-than-expected first quarter of the year, with quarterly operating profits reaching €336m, a significant increase from €60m the previous year, which was impacted by the breakup with West. Despite the separation, Adidas reported additional sales of €150m worth of Yeezy products in the quarter, yielding a profit of around €50m.

The company plans to sell the remaining Yeezy stock for approximately €200m later this year, albeit without further profit. Notably, Adidas pledged to donate a portion of the proceeds from Yeezy sales to charities combating hate, underscoring its commitment to social responsibility.

Although Adidas terminated its partnership with West in November 2022 following antisemitic comments, the brand maintains a diverse fan base, including affluent clientele. Recent attention was drawn to Adidas when it was revealed that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had been a loyal customer for many years, particularly of the Samba brand. Sunak, recognizing the potential impact on his reputation, issued a “fulsome” apology but expressed his enduring devotion to the Adidas brand.

Despite the positive outlook, Adidas remains cautious about the impact of the Yeezy affair on its profits. Additionally, the devaluation of the Argentine peso in late 2023 has affected the company, as it produces shirts for Argentina’s national football team. This currency devaluation also impacted rival sportswear firm Puma, highlighting the challenges posed by economic fluctuations in key markets.

Overall, Adidas’ resilience and strategic measures demonstrate its ability to navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities, positioning the brand for continued success in the global sportswear market.
