South African Youth NPO Applauds Agoa Renewal Bill
Afrika Tikkun, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering disadvantaged youth in South Africa, has expressed its support for the recent bipartisan effort to renew the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) until 2041. Democrat Senator Chris Coons and Republican Senator James Risch introduced the “Agoa Renewal and Improvement Act of 2024” bill in Congress, aiming to enhance a crucial trade program with sub-Saharan African countries.
Agoa grants eligible sub-Saharan African nations duty-free access to the US market for over 1,800 products, supplementing the more than 5,000 products eligible under the Generalized System of Preferences program.
Executive Deputy Chairman of Afrika Tikkun, Marc Lubner, emphasized the importance of initiatives like Agoa in creating both commercial and social opportunities for youth. He highlighted how Agoa’s renewal aligns with their mission to equip young South Africans with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in a globalized economy.
Lubner noted Agoa’s role in fostering economic growth and development across Africa and expressed confidence that its renewal would empower South Africa’s youth, furthering economic development and prosperity for the continent.
Since its inception in 2000, Agoa has been integral to US economic policy and commercial engagement with Africa. The eligibility criteria for Agoa require participating countries to establish or make progress towards establishing a market-based economy, the rule of law, political pluralism, and due process rights.
Senator Risch urged swift reauthorization of Agoa by Congress, emphasizing the program’s significant role in US-sub-Saharan Africa trade and investment, as well as its importance in US foreign policy.
The proposed Agoa Renewal and Improvement Act seeks to extend Agoa until 2041, providing businesses with the certainty needed to increase investment in sub-Saharan Africa. The legislation aims to encourage sustainable development, regional integration, and stronger relations between the US and countries in the region.
Senator Coons emphasized Agoa’s contribution to job creation, economic growth, and investment opportunities in one of the world’s fastest-growing regions. He underscored the necessity of the Agoa Renewal and Improvement Act to support continued economic development on the continent while strengthening ties between the United States and its partners in sub-Saharan Africa.
