In a significant development for South Africa’s renewable energy sector, former Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer has assumed a leadership role at Mulilo, a prominent independent power producer. Oberholzer’s transition marks a strategic move towards accelerating investment in renewable energy infrastructure, including wind, solar, and battery storage.
After retiring from Eskom in April last year, Oberholzer continued his involvement in critical projects at the Kusile and Koeberg power stations under a two-year service contract. However, his tenure at Eskom concluded abruptly, with the power utility announcing his departure “by mutual consent” just three months later.
Undeterred by this setback, Oberholzer has now set his sights on spearheading Mulilo’s ambitious plans to inject over $3 billion (more than R55 billion) into local renewable energy projects over the next five years. His vision extends beyond mere generation capacity, aiming to position Mulilo as a major player in the energy landscape alongside traditional giants like Eskom.
