Janie du Plessis Makes Major Comeback as Reality Show Host

Janie du Plessis returns to TV as host of kykNET’s In die Sop: Gastehuisrevolusie. Here’s everything you need to know about the new season.

One of the most beloved faces of 1980s South African television, Janie du Plessis, is making a highly anticipated return to the small screen — this time as the host of kykNET’s brand-new reality series, In die Sop: Gastehuisrevolusie.

Premiering on Thursday, 23 April at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144), the fourth season of the popular In die Sop franchise shifts focus from struggling restaurants to guesthouses in need of rescue.

A Familiar Face Returns to Screens

Viewers will remember Janie as the vibrant presenter of iconic youth magazine shows Teletien and Graffiti, as well as for her roles alongside Arnold Vosloo in classic films like Boetie gaan border toe (1984) and Boetie op manoeuvres (1985).

Over the past four decades, she has remained one of South Africa’s most recognisable television personalities — but her experience goes far beyond the entertainment industry.

From TV Star to Guesthouse Expert

A savvy businesswoman, Janie has spent the last decade travelling across South Africa doing charity work, often staying in guesthouses multiple times a week. This hands-on experience makes her the perfect host for a show focused on turning struggling hospitality businesses around.

In die Sop: Gastehuisrevolusie will assist 13 struggling guesthouses, from Bethulie to Worcester and beyond.

What the Show Is About

The title says it all — “In die Sop” (Afrikaans for “in trouble”) reflects the challenges many of these guesthouses face.

From:

  • Slow bookings
  • Poor maintenance
  • Outdated marketing strategies

Many of these establishments are in desperate need of expert intervention — and a fresh start.

Real Challenges Facing Guesthouse Owners

According to Janie, the show addresses real issues affecting South African entrepreneurs:

“Many people saw their guesthouse dreams fade due to Covid, politics, and the economy. The guesthouses we visited were truly in trouble.”

She highlights that many owners — especially in rural areas — struggle with:

  • Digital marketing
  • Online booking platforms
  • Reaching modern audiences

Meet the Expert Team

Janie is joined by a strong team of specialists, including:

  • Misi Overturf
  • Griki Lubbe
  • Willus Bosch

Together, they provide renovation, design, business, and marketing support to help transform each guesthouse.

Before each intervention, a “spy” is sent ahead to uncover the root problems — ensuring tailored and effective solutions.

More Than Just Makeovers

Janie emphasizes that the show goes deeper than surface-level changes:

“Turning a business around takes much more than cosmetic improvements. Every guesthouse is unique, and owners must understand and implement the changes themselves.”

A Show With Heart

For Janie, the emotional impact is what truly makes the show special:

“Seeing hope restored within days is incredibly rewarding. I feel privileged to be part of this programme.”
