South African motorists can breathe a sigh of relief. After months of record-high fuel prices, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has officially confirmed significant decreases across all fuel types, effective from Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
After four consecutive months of punishing increases that pushed petrol to an all-time record of R28.06 per litre, July brings welcome relief for households and businesses alike.

Why Are Fuel Prices Dropping?
Two major factors have driven this welcome decrease:
1. International Oil Prices Have Plunged
A ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, signed on 15 June 2026, has dramatically reduced geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz – which carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil – has been reopened.
As a result, Brent Crude has dropped to around $70–$80 per barrel, down from its peak of over $126 per barrel in late April.
2. The Rand Has Strengthened
The South African rand has shown resilience, trading around R16.20 to the US dollar – a significant improvement from earlier in the year. This has further reduced the cost of importing fuel.

The Fuel Levy Relief Has Ended
While the news is good, it’s important to understand the full picture. The temporary fuel levy relief introduced by the National Treasury in April 2026 has now been completely phased out.
This means the full General Fuel Levy of R4.10 per litre on petrol and R3.93 per litre on diesel has been reinstated.
