Nelson Makamo Presents “BLUE” in Los Angeles
Los Angeles, USA – Globally recognised and widely collected, acclaimed South African artist Nelson Makamo officially opened his first independent solo exhibition in the United States this past weekend. The exhibition, titled “BLUE,” showcases his latest body of work and marks a major milestone in the artist’s international career.
The highly anticipated exhibition has been in the works since 2017, and was independently organised by Makamo and his team. The project brought together an all-female group of dynamic and progressive Black professionals who helped curate this landmark show.
After considering several locations, Makamo and his team selected inner-city Los Angeles earlier this year. The vibrant and diverse contemporary art scene in the city’s Arts District made it the perfect destination to host his first solo exhibition in the United States.
A Global Voice in Contemporary Art
Now 39 years old, Nelson Makamo is widely regarded as one of the most sought-after visual artists of his generation. Over the years, he has developed a distinct artistic signature, using bold colors and emotive portraits that capture the spirit, resilience, and hope of African youth.
His artwork has resonated with collectors and audiences around the world. Over the past decade, Makamo’s work has been featured in numerous prestigious exhibitions and private collections across:
- Africa
- Europe
- The United States
- New York City
Through his powerful storytelling and expressive portraits, Makamo continues to expand the global presence of African contemporary art.
Nelson Makamo on His First US Solo Exhibition
Speaking about the exhibition, Makamo shared his excitement about finally bringing the project to life.
“Finally my own independent international show here in L.A., it actually feels great. When the team and I initially started the conversation about this show back in 2017, we didn’t realise the hard work and commitment that would go into it. And what a journey it’s been! Having just successfully opened this past weekend made it all worth it for us.”
Makamo explained that the exhibition BLUE aims to spark conversations about identity, humanity, and shared experiences.
“With the latest piece of work BLUE, we don’t only want to share our story, but invite people to the exhibition to be part of the conversation. As much as I live on the African continent, I don’t want my work to only have a frame of where I live in South Africa.”
“I want my work to resonate with people from all walks of life, from different races and backgrounds – the global community at large. It’s about connecting artists on a global platform through this exhibition.”
He added that the underlying theme of the exhibition is hope, a message that has consistently shaped his work.
“Like all my previous work, the underlying theme of this exhibition is about HOPE. When you think about the future, you think hope. I’m looking forward to how the world receives BLUE.”
