Get ready for the largest on-the-ground art festival in Johannesburg
May 28 & 29 10:30–16:00.
Joburg is one of the world’s art cities, fueled by a network of studio spaces throughout the inner
city that give life daily to the city’s status as an art capital. In May 2022 the doors will open to
welcome visitors to the studios of close to 100 working artists.
Initiated by the META foundation, OPEN STUDIOS JOBURG will highlight seven art buildings,
across the historical CBD and beyond, where visitors will be invited to meet the artists, interact
with the works, and enjoy a programme of exhibitions, walkabouts, performance and design.
The sites are: August House, Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, Ellis House, Living Artists Emporium,
LAPA at Breezeblock, Transwerke Studios and Victoria Yards.
OPEN STUDIOS JOBURG will take place over two days, Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May,
2022 with selected studios being open on these two different days. The studios will be linked via
a free shuttle service that will allow visitors to safely explore the city. Three shuttles will move in a
loop between the buildings, with transport available every 15 minutes. Access to all events is
FREE, but visitors must register here on Saturday 28 May or Sunday 29 May for their free tickets.
The tickets permit shuttle access.
With almost 100 artists participating, unique programming for the two days, and plans for future
editions, OPEN STUDIOS is set to become a landmark event on Joburg’s cultural calendar directly
supporting Joburg’s creative economy by creating a platform for artists to sell their work.
These studio spaces are the lifeblood of the city’s artist economy, and have given rise to some of
South Africa’s most prominent artists, including the late David Koloane, Sam Nhlengethwa,
Nelson Makamo, Diane Victor, Patrick Mautloa, Usha Seejarim, Jake Singer, Ayanda Mabula and
many many more.
