Rubicon Unveils “Medley of Nature” Collection Inspired by Mapungubwe

Johannesburg, South Africa — Rubicon has unveiled its latest collection, “Medley of Nature,” drawing inspiration from the historic Mapungubwe Kingdom in Limpopo.
The collection takes its design cues from Mapungubwe’s social structure, its extensive trade connections with the Far East and the diverse ecosystem surrounding the ancient kingdom.
With limited research available about the exact fashion trends of 1200 AD, Rubicon founder and head designer Hangwani Nengovhela allowed herself to reimagine what fashion from the era could have looked like.
Reimagining Mapungubwe Through Fashion
At its height, Mapungubwe was a thriving kingdom where people lived in abundance and wealth.
The kingdom’s social structure was reflected in its physical landscape, with the ruler and upper classes occupying the top of Mapungubwe Hill while working communities lived on the level ground below.
Rubicon translates this hierarchy into its garments through layering, fabric construction and movement.
The collection uses different levels and layers within the clothing to reflect the various levels of authority within the ancient kingdom, while the choice and movement of fabrics help bring the historical inspiration into a contemporary fashion context.
Rubicon’s Attention to Detail
With more than 22 years on the global fashion scene, Rubicon has built a reputation around its attention to detail.
For “Medley of Nature,” that focus is particularly evident in the finer elements of the collection.
Among the key design details are:
- Top-stitching, inspired by garments associated with emissaries from the Far East.
- Magenta, sage and white, colours inspired by Mapungubwe’s landscape, including its horizon, flora and fauna.
- Layered fabrics and structured construction, reflecting the social hierarchy of the Mapungubwe Kingdom.
- Movement within the garments, connecting the collection’s contemporary silhouettes with the natural environment that inspired it.
The collection also draws from Mapungubwe’s history as a major trading kingdom.
During its heyday, emissaries travelled from distant regions to trade with the kingdom, which was particularly renowned for valuable commodities including gold and ivory.
Meet the Rubicon Queen
At the centre of the collection is the #RubiconQueen — a modern woman who carries the spirit of Mapungubwe wherever she goes.
She is envisioned as a global traveller who moves between different worlds while maintaining a strong connection to her identity, power and heritage.
Whether she’s heading to work or attending a social event, the Rubicon Queen is presented as a woman who is confident in how she carries herself.
She is uncompromising in her presentation and is defined by those around her as regal, powerful and guided by integrity.
Maduvha Opens the Showcase
The latest Rubicon collection was unveiled during a showcase in Johannesburg, with acclaimed local artist and United Nations ambassador Maduvha opening the show.
Maduvha performed her Rubicon-inspired song “Mapungubwe” as models took to the runway to showcase the latest collection.
The combination of music, fashion and African history reinforced the collection’s central idea — bringing the legacy of Mapungubwe into a contemporary creative space.

A Modern Interpretation of an Ancient Kingdom
“Medley of Nature” is ultimately Rubicon’s interpretation of a period where trade, wealth, nature and social hierarchy shaped one of Southern Africa’s most significant ancient kingdoms.
Rather than attempting to recreate historical clothing literally, Nengovhela uses Mapungubwe as a starting point for imagining what that history can look like through modern fashion.
The result is a collection that connects South African heritage with contemporary design, while keeping the Rubicon Queen at the centre of the story.
