Zoë Modiga Finds Beauty in Life’s Unexpected Seasons on “When The Rain Comes”

South African singer, songwriter and performer Zoë Modiga returns with “When The Rain Comes,” a reflective new single exploring adversity, renewal and the perspective that emerges from life’s changing seasons.

Inspired by the familiar 17th-century nursery rhyme “Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Again Another Day,” the song reimagines a childhood plea through the lens of adulthood. Where rain once represented an interruption to play, Modiga uses it as a metaphor for life’s storms — moments that can unsettle and disrupt, but also create space for restoration and growth.

“Much like life’s storms, though it can be frightening when it thunders and storms, it is also a source of restoration and life. Knowing that is a warmth within itself, I pray those who aren’t anchored in that find it,” Modiga explains.

That perspective sits at the heart of “When The Rain Comes.” Rather than viewing hardship only as something to endure, Modiga explores how difficult seasons can carry their own lessons and nourishment. The single invites listeners to reconsider the unexpected challenges that interrupt their plans and recognise that uncertainty can also create opportunities for renewal.

Sonically, the release reflects Modiga’s expansive approach to African music, drawing from indigenous African sounds, soul, jazz, experimental music and alternative influences. The result continues her exploration of a contemporary musical identity rooted in cultural expression and storytelling.

“When The Rain Comes” forms part of The Vault, Modiga’s latest body of work, which has also introduced listeners to singles including “Something New,” “Low” and “Did I Do My Thing.” The latter has received rotation on music video stations, extending the project’s reach.

Born in Durban and raised in Pietermaritzburg’s eMbali 1, Modiga has built an artistic practice that extends beyond music into fashion, storytelling and cultural expression. Across these disciplines, she continues to explore identity, the human experience and the possibilities of African creative expression.

With The Vault available now, “When The Rain Comes” adds another chapter to Modiga’s evolving catalogue — offering a reminder that even during uncertain seasons, restoration and growth can be taking place beneath the surface.
