Petrol Prices Lowered, Diesel Prices Increase: Impact on Consumers and Factors at Play
In recent news, South Africa experienced changes in fuel prices, with unleaded petrol prices seeing a decrease while diesel prices increased. This article explores the implications of these price fluctuations, the factors influencing them, and the potential impact on consumers.
Fuel Price Adjustments: On Wednesday, the unleaded petrol price (95) saw a reduction of 17 cents per litre, while the 93 variant was lowered by 24 cents per litre. Conversely, diesel prices saw an increase ranging from 12 to 18 cents per litre, depending on the sulphur content. Illuminating paraffin prices decreased by 4 to 5 cents, as reported by the Central Energy Fund (CEF).
Factors Influencing Fuel Prices: South African fuel prices are primarily determined by international oil costs and the rand-dollar exchange rate, as oil is priced in dollars. Over the past month, the average rand-dollar exchange rate was R18.6825/$, compared to R18.9854 in the previous month. While the oil price experienced a slight decline due to international recession fears and expected global economic slowdown, petrol prices globally increased due to the ongoing driving season in the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, tighter supplies led to higher middle distillate prices, including diesel.
Impact on Consumers: The recent changes bring the price of a litre of 95 unleaded petrol to R22.46 in Gauteng, up from R21.40 at the beginning of 2023. It is worth noting that in July of the previous year, petrol reached a record price of R26.74. The wholesale diesel price in Gauteng now stands at R19.49 per litre, compared to R21.22 at the start of the year. Diesel prices have gradually returned to levels seen prior to the spike caused by the Ukraine invasion, where prices reached close to R25.50.
The recent adjustments in fuel prices, with petrol prices decreasing and diesel prices increasing, reflect the influence of international oil costs, exchange rates, and global supply dynamics. While the reduction in petrol prices may provide some relief for consumers, the increase in diesel prices could impact industries and sectors heavily reliant on diesel fuel. As fuel prices remain subject to various factors, including geopolitical events and global economic conditions, consumers and businesses should stay informed and adapt their strategies accordingly.
